How to Photograph Dancers Like a Pro (Even If You're Not a Dance Expert)

Photographing dancers requires a fundamentally different approach than other portrait work. Dancers communicate through their bodies, and your job is to use lighting, timing, and composition to reveal their lines and artistry. In this video, I share the practical methodologies I've developed through dozens of dance shoots, even though I'm not a dance expert myself. The key is collaboration. I use tethering to let dancers see the images in real time and guide the adjustments. When you understand the technical foundation—how to freeze motion with strobes and continuous light, how foreshortening affects their extended lines, and how lighting shapes or obscures their form—you gain the clarity to make intentional creative decisions. Whether you're working with controlled poses or explosive jumps, the principle remains the same: honor the dancer's craft while using your eye and technical execution to create compelling images. 👉 Join Learn+ to check out the dancer episode: https://lindsayadler.photo/learnplus For post processing, such as cropping out items or extending the background I recommend Evoto: 👉 https://www.evoto.ai/c/LindsayAdler - Get 15 free credits to try out the software through my link. 💡 Lighting Key light positioning is critical to reveal body lines and control shadow placement Rim lights and fill lights create separation between the dancer and background Avoid heavy shadows that blend the subject into the background 📸 Camera Settings For Continuous Light Shooting: ✅ Shutter Speed: 1/500 (minimum) or faster for motion freezing ✅ Adjust based on movement intensity (faster for jumps and big movements) For Strobe Shooting: ✅ Shutter Speed: 1/200 (sync speed) ✅ Flash Duration: As short as possible to freeze motion ✅ Use freeze mode if available on your strobes 📸 Gear: ✅ Canon EOS R5: https://adorama.rfvk.net/JxzdE ✅ Canon RF 70-200mm: https://adorama.rfvk.net/Jrr6q2 ✅ Profoto D2: https://adorama.rfvk.net/qvB7y ✅ Profoto 4' RFi Softbox Octa: https://prf.hn/l/rd29jBL/ ✅ Profoto 4' RFi Softbox Octa Grid: https://prf.hn/l/xEMyZMl/ ✅ Profoto 1x4' Stripbox: https://adorama.rfvk.net/4AdQn ✅ Profoto 1x4' Stripbox grid: https://adorama.rfvk.net/4AdQn ✅ Profoto Air Remote: https://adorama.rfvk.net/W3o5G ✅ Avenger D600 boom arm: https://adorama.rfvk.net/XRdAG ✅ Savage C-Stand: https://adorama.rfvk.net/J1ZW2 ✅ Savage Seamless Fashion Gray: https://prf.hn/l/7gzpjPy/ ✅ Savage Seamless Plum: https://prf.hn/l/zpJ9GQQ/ ✅ Savage Seamless Primary Red: https://prf.hn/l/OqBg8Xz/ ✅ Tether Tools TetherBoost Pro 31' USB-C to Micro-B Cable, Orange Right Angle: https://adorama.rfvk.net/Kj11ja 🔥 Interested in learning more about these looks check out my lighting guides: http://learn.lindsayadlerphotography.... ---- 👉 Portfolio: http://lindsayadlerphotography.com 👉 Instagram:   / lindsayadler_photo   👉 Facebook:   / lindsayadlerphotography   👉 Twitter:   / lindsayadler   👉 Education: http://learn.lindsayadlerphotography.com Some of the links in this description contain affiliate links to partners.
