The village of Due in the Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky District is rightfully considered one of the oldest villages in the Sakhalin Region. It is associated with perhaps the most pivotal events in the history and development of our region. This article explores how Due became the starting point for the coal industry and the mass settlement of northern Sakhalin. The legendary navigator and explorer Gennady Ivanovich Nevelskoy, while in Petropavlovsk-on-Amur, often hosted Sakhalin Nivkhs. One day, Nevelskoy learned from another guest, Zakovann, of a "black stone" lying on Sakhalin soil. Then, on his instructions, Lieutenant N.K. Boshnyak and Cossack S. Parfentyev set out for Sakhalin by dog ​​sled to verify the Nivkh's words. Exploring the island's western coast, Boshnyak, having trudged across the Tym River's ice, reached Nyisky Bay, where he first discovered coal deposits. The information gathered by N.K. Boshnyak would later gain practical significance. In 1852, sailors from the Russian steam schooner "Vostok" mined approximately 15,000 poods of Sakhalin coal off the coast of Cape Due. In the years following the discovery, British ships would approach the area seeking coal. Russian officers were extremely wary of foreigners frequenting Sakhalin for coal. Thus, in April 1856, N.N. Muravyov, Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, ordered not only a team of sailors to Sakhalin to mine the coal, but also the establishment of a post of the same name at Cape Due, part of the Aleksandrovsky District. In June of that same year, a young naval officer from the frigate "Pallada," A.M. Linden, took 25 sailors and a dismantled hut with him, picked up N.M. Chikhachev, who was in De-Kastri, and set off to work on the coal quarries.
