Orchid lovers don't just live on Phalaenopsis. If you want plants with beautiful, easy-to-care-for flowers, Hawaiian orchids are a great option. Our gardener Carol Costa introduces you to these plants and shares all the secrets of the Hawaiian orchid. Aloha! One of the great advantages of Hawaiian orchids is their hardiness. They are easy-to-care-for species, in addition to being highly adapted to our Brazilian climate – yes, there are many native species of Oncidium, the main genus of Hawaiian orchids. Whether you already have one and want to expand your collection or are new to orchid cultivation, these plants are perfect. Hawaiian orchids bloom generously and produce flowers more than once a year. Their stems remain full of flowers, with their delicate, patterned petals, for a long time. The plant almost always has more than one flower stem, waiting for its turn to shine. Even without flowers, the plant has an elegant appearance, remaining green until the next bloom, which is not long in coming. The colors of Hawaiian orchid flowers go far beyond yellow. You'll find flowers with petals of lilac, orange, red, pink, and many others with incredible patterns and designs. Besides the variety of colors, the distinct flower shapes are another attraction of this genus, some with elongated star shapes, while others have very large sepals and petals. The golden shower orchid (Oncidium) is one of the best-known specimens of this orchid genus. From this same group, the charming Burrageara "Spanish Gold," the golden Oncostele "Hilo Firecracker Lucky Strike," and Burrageara "Brazilian Sun" are also from the Oncidium genus, but are called intergeneric. These are "mixtures" of orchid species, helped by human hand, and the specimens with the most beautiful flower patterns and colors are selected. Magna Flora cultivates over 30 varieties and is the largest producer of Hawaiian orchids in Brazil – it was there, in their greenhouses, that our plant-loving lover recorded this video. This enormous variety and mix of species is surprising, but little by little, you get used to observing the plant and noticing familiar characteristics among them. Don't be surprised if, upon seeing a Hawaiian orchid flower, you think the petal resembles one species and the color "takes" from another. Remember when someone looked at Harry Potter and said, "You look like your father, except for the eyes, you have your mother's eyes."? That's pretty much it! Characteristics of some genera, such as Miltonia and Brassia, are easy to spot in these orchids. Easy to care for, Hawaiian orchids can withstand long periods without watering – note the plant's pseudobulbs, a natural reservoir of water and nutrients. Of course, you shouldn't let them go thirsty unnecessarily! Therefore, using a finger to feel the substrate and know when to water, fertilizing (hi, Bokashi!), and a few hours of sunlight, preferably in the morning, will keep your Hawaiian orchids happy and blooming. These are very long-lived plants, producing many buds and flower stalks when well cared for. Fun fact: the name "Hawaiian" derives from the origin of the genetic improvement of these flowers.
