Born in Detroit in 1940 as the seventh son of a Ford worker and a beautician, Leon Ware's first song came together at age nine. Marvin Gaye's classic "I Want You" was supposed to be for Ware's solo album but Berry Gordy convinced him to collaborate with Gaye instead. Following that, he went on to write the first number one hit for Michael Jackson as a soul artist.
