Proverbs 31 Was Never Written to Women
Proverbs 31 is one of the most preached, most merchandised, most referenced chapters in all of evangelical Christianity. It has spawned devotional journals, podcast networks, conference circuits, and Mother's Day sermons across hundreds of thousands of churches annually. It is handed to women as the defining standard of biblical womanhood. There is one problem with all of it: the chapter is addressed to a king. The text opens with a superscription — the words of King Lemuel, an oracle his mother taught him. The Hebrew word for oracle is masa, the same word Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nahum, and Habakkuk use when delivering a prophetic burden with governing authority. A mother is giving her royal son a prophetic charge about how to govern his life and his household. The woman of valor she describes — eshet chayil in the Hebrew — uses the same root word applied to Gideon, to Boaz, to David's elite fighting force. It is a warrior strength word. And the man she is described for appears in the chapter six times, three of them explicitly governing: he sits among the elders in the gates, he praises her publicly, he declares her worth. He is not a background character. He is the governing frame around which the entire chapter is structured. This video goes back to the Hebrew, back to the structure, back to what the text actually says before the devotional industry got to it.
