Russell told media he did a big lift but the telemetry data proved he gained time through the yellow flag zone. Russell entered the danger area five tenths up on his lap and exited two and a half tenths ahead after Verstappen crashed into the wall during qualifying. Ferrari's evidence showed Russell never reduced speed to the level required under yellow flag regulations.
