The Little Mermaid vs Ponyo: Exploring Feminism in Children’s Films | IB Film Comparative Study 2023

The examination of female identity and agency represented in children's films is a topic worth investigating and discussing, especially in our modern day and age. The comparisons that can be drawn between The Little Mermaid (1989) and Ponyo (2009), two animated children's films based off of the same fairytale, are ones that I found substantial in facilitating such an analysis--- which I had used to carry out my 2023 IB Film class Comparative Study coursework. I am incredibly excited to share one of my favourite academic projects with you all, as it is something that I feel deeply passionate about!
