Susan Page, "The Matriarch" (with Diane Rehm)
Susan Page discusses her book, "The Matriarch", with Diane Rehm, at Politics and Prose. In the first new biography of Barbara Bush (1925-2018) in a decade, Page, the award-winning Washington Bureau chief of USA Today, shows that Bush was far more than just a wife and mother of two different American presidents—unprecedented though that is. Always supportive of the leaders even when in disagreement with their ideas, Bush not only became an astute strategist in their campaigns, she also worked for many years to expand literacy programs and to combat homelessness. Drawing on her experience covering the White House under six different presidents and on interviews with her subject, Page shows that Barbara Bush, like Eleanor Roosevelt before her, made her own valuable contributions, independent of those of the presidents she was related to. Page is in conversation with Diane Rehm, host of the On My Mind podcast and formerly The Diane Rehm Show. https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9...
