The care, training, and preparation before each competition are key to achieving the best times in a sport in which rider and horse attempt to complete a cloverleaf pattern. The pair must spin through the three barrels forming a triangle and race out of the third barrel at full speed in a straight line. Whoever completes this in the shortest time is the winner. Originally, barrel racing was created for women, while men competed in bull riding, colt riding, and calf roping. The first competitions in this sport took place in Texas, United States.
