Wave Decay - Chesapeake - Timothy Reinholz (Scrolling Score)

Chesapeake is a sonification composition of ocean buoy data, transforming real-time wave movement into sound. In this piece, buoy displacement (north/south, east/west, and vertical) is mapped to pitch and dynamics, while peak wave direction follows the circle of fifths. The composition contrasts data from three buoys in the Chesapeake Bay: one deep within the bay, one at its mouth, and one in the open ocean beyond. The waves heard in this piece occurred at 5:30 PM on February 16th, 2025. Special thanks to the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) ocean buoy network (cdip.ucsd.edu) A special thank you to Carl Q. for the collaboration and performance on March 28, 2025. Recorded at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (2025)
