Inside the Shop Helping 300 Startups Build Real Products | mHub Machine Shop Tour
What does it really take to turn an idea into a physical product and eventually into a real business? We visit mHUB Chicago, a massive innovation center where more than 300 startups share access to the equipment, training and support they need to bring hard tech ideas to life. This is much more than a traditional makerspace. Inside the 35,000-square-foot prototyping shop, members can take an early idea, build a working prototype, test it, make changes and even produce short runs before investing in their own equipment or moving into a dedicated facility. As we walk through the space, we see everything from fiber lasers and welding equipment to industrial 3D printers, environmental test chambers and a CT scanner that can look inside a product without destroying it. Some of the most important work happens in the machining area. mHUB’s Tormach CNC mills and lathe give members a practical way to learn machining, work with materials ranging from plastic to steel and produce the parts they need as their ideas develop. These are not machines sitting around for display. They are working tools that members use for prototypes, one-off components and early production runs. One of the best stories from the tour is about a member who arrived with no machining experience, started making replacement parts for electric skateboards and eventually became skilled enough to machine parts for other companies. He now runs his own Tormach inside one of mHUB’s private garage spaces. That kind of growth is what makes this place so interesting. Members can start with shared equipment, build their skills, learn from the people around them and eventually create something of their own. At the end of the day, this tour is about more than machines. It is about making it easier for people to turn good ideas into real products and giving them the tools and confidence to keep moving forward. Which piece of equipment at mHUB would you want to use first? Do you think more cities need spaces like this? Let us know in the comments. This video was produced in partnership with Tormach.
