TakeOut Workshop: Palestinian Embroidery (Tatreez)

We are back with another installation of our Tatreez workshops led by Joanna Barakat ! Get introduced to Palestinian embroidery from the safety and comfort of your home! Barakat will discuss the history and cultural context of Palestinian embroidery over zoom, and participants will produce their own wearable items embroidered with Palestinian motifs. By the end of the first day of the workshop, participants gain a new understanding of the meanings behind the motifs, the history and culture that they stem from, and a new skill that they can develop. ⁠⠀ https://bit.ly/3i3ws0B Joanna Barakat’s work brings together the disciplines of painting, photography, and Palestinian embroidery to challenge and question collective ideas and stereotypes using a reimagined contemporary Palestinian aesthetic. Born in Jerusalem and raised in Los Angeles, she received her Bachelor of Art from Central Saint Martins in Art and Design and her Masters of Art in Global Media and Postnational Communication from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Her passion for Palestinian embroidery is shared on The Tatreez Circle, an online platform focused on preserving and promoting Palestinian embroidery. She also teaches Palestinian embroidery workshops in the UAE, where she is currently living.
