It all began with Omar Bongo Ondimba, who rose to power at just 32 years old after the death of Léon M’ba. Protected by the Françafrique networks, backed by Paris and oil giants like Elf Total, he built a unique political system — a blend of authoritarian stability, silent repression, and exploitation of Gabon’s oil wealth. For more than four decades, Omar Bongo ruled as an absolute master, concentrating power, distributing oil money, and silencing opposition. In 2009, after his death, his son Ali Bongo took over. Officially elected in a contested election, Ali promised a “Emerging Gabon,” but illusions quickly faded. The electoral frauds of 2009 and 2016, the violent crackdowns in Libreville and Port-Gentil, the scandal of the ill-gotten gains, and the shocking cases of ritual crimes deeply marked his presidency. The crisis peaked in 2016: internet shutdowns, manipulated results in the Haut-Ogooué region, the burning of the National Assembly, deaths and mass arrests. Despite the challenge led by Jean Ping, Ali Bongo held onto power with the backing of the Constitutional Court, led by Marie-Madeleine Mborantsuo, a key figure of the clan. In 2018, Ali suffered a stroke, leaving him weakened. Rumors spread, rival clans clashed, and his wife Sylvia and son Noureddin tightened their grip on the presidency. The divide between the regime and the people became irreparable. Finally, in August 2023, after yet another disputed election, the unthinkable happened: a military coup led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema ended 55 years of Bongo family rule. In the streets of Libreville and Port-Gentil, Gabonese citizens celebrated what many called a “second independence,” denouncing decades of dictatorship, corruption, ill-gotten wealth, and dependence on the Françafrique system. 👉 This full-length documentary retraces, chapter by chapter, the political history of Gabon: the rise and fall of the Bongo dynasty, election frauds, violent repression, oil exploitation, and the final downfall of 2023. 📺 More documentaries to watch on La Trame 🔹 Paul Biya: 43 Years in Power — The Forbidden Story of Cameroon 👉 Watch here:    • Paul Biya : 43 ans au pouvoir, l’histoire ...   🔹 Blaise Compaoré: Godfather of Terrorism in Africa?
