Director & Narration: Naomi Kawase Music: Hashiken --------------------------------- Shimokitayama Village, located in the southeastern part of Nara Prefecture, is known as a hidden village at the foot of Mount Omine. Shimokitayama Village is home to a traditional pickled vegetable called "Shimokita Harumana," which has been cultivated since before the Meiji era. Nurtured by the clear waters flowing from the Omine mountain range, and thanks to the region's harsh winters, it has become a local specialty. As villagers call it "the treasure of Shimokitayama," it is highly nutritious, characterized by its rich umami, sweetness, and slight bitterness. Furthermore, forestry is another local industry in Shimokitayama. Planted by prospectors 80 years ago and nurtured in the village's lush forests, the trees are processed into fittings and furniture that make the most of their materials. Young people, including those who have returned to the village after being drawn to it, including those who have moved here, are breathing new life into the local industry by creating new attractions and shaping them into reality. Located in a mountain village far from the city, life in the village is harsh and cold. But Shimokitayama Village is home to delicious vegetables, fresh air, kind people and an abundance of nature.
