St. Ann is famous for producing legendary artists and thinkers, and Jahna grew up surrounded by lush green mountains, sugarcane fields, and the distant rhythm of drums carried by the Caribbean wind. Her village, Nine Mile Ridge, was a small farming community where music was not entertainment—it was a way of life. On weekends, elders gathered around fires to chant Nyabinghi rhythms while children danced under the moonlight. Jahna was born into a deeply spiritual Rastafarian family. Her father, Malakai Dube, was a Zimbabwean percussionist who had migrated to Jamaica in the 1970s after traveling with African liberation musicians. He carried the traditions of African drum rhythms and Pan-African philosophy. Her mother, Marcia Bennett-Dube, was a Jamaican herbalist and community healer who taught Jahna about natural living, roots medicine, and the teachings of Emperor Haile Selassie. The Dube household was humble but full of culture: Drums and handmade instruments filled the yard Old vinyl records spun constantly on a battered turntable Elders visited to discuss politics, spirituality, and African identity From childhood, Jahna absorbed the idea that music was a weapon against oppression and a voice for truth. Jahna’s earliest musical memories came from her father’s vinyl collection. She grew up listening to legends such as: Bob Marley Peter Tosh Burning Spear Dennis Brown But Jahna was also inspired by African soul and freedom music her father brought from Zimbabwe. As a child she sang in local gatherings called “Reasoning Sessions,” where musicians improvised roots reggae songs about spirituality, freedom, and Babylon’s corruption. At age 13, she wrote her first song titled “Daughter of Zion.” Jahna’s music carried three core messages: Spiritual awakening African unity Resistance against Babylon systems Fans began calling her: “The Lioness of Zion.” Her songs blended roots reggae, African rhythms, and spiritual chants, making her one of the most powerful voices of modern reggae. stay tuned, I&I family!
