To understand why we gain weight, we need to start by analyzing our diet: When we drink a can of soda or eat other foods high in carbohydrates—especially high-glycemic carbohydrates—we cause a rapid increase in blood sugar, and therefore an increase in body fat. Not only that, it triggers a vicious cycle that creates hormonal imbalances and other cascading effects: we'll be hungry more often than before; we'll become increasingly dependent on foods that counteract reactive hypoglycemia (i.e., low blood glucose levels after insulin release, which can be triggered by various factors); and we'll see increased inflammation in the body. And if this vicious cycle continues over the months and years, we'll have to change our clothing sizes. This will lead to feelings of guilt for not having had enough willpower to follow a low-calorie diet like the one they continue to recommend. We'll lose self-confidence, become increasingly stressed, and gain even more weight. Inflammation and insulin resistance will increase. This is how we've reached the rampant prevalence of diseases like obesity, diabetes, and all inflammatory conditions. Weight loss, therefore, requires a careful change in our habits.
