Episode 16: Asokam, Marutham and Kungiliyam (அசோகம், மருதம் மற்றும் குங்கிலியம்) Asokam (அசோகம்) - This belongs to Saraca asoca family of trees. This a rain-forest tree. Its original distribution was in the central areas of the Deccan plateau, as well as the middle section of the Western Ghats in the western coastal zone of the Indian subcontinent. It is prized for its beautiful foliage and fragrant flowers. It is a handsome, small, erect evergreen tree, with deep green leaves growing in dense clusters. Marutham (மருதம்) - This is commonly known as Arjuna tree. It has oblong, conical leaves which are green on the top and brown below; smooth, grey bark; it has pale yellow flowers. Its leaves, fruits and bark are filled with medicinal value. A truly remarkable tree which is said to house the Saptarishis in it. Kungiliyam (குங்கிலியம்) - Kungiliam, a medicinal tree is a rare and precious. This species is commonly known as Sal tree or Shala. Also called Shorea Robusta. Kungiliam is used in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani because of its miraculous medicinal power. It is good for curing chronic skin disorders, musculoskeletal disorder, tumors, diseases of oral cavity, rheumatism, fever, cough, asthma, epilepsy, ear and hair ailments etc. Image Credit: Google Image Search.
