In this deep dive, I'm tracing the full story of how television nearly bankrupted the American film industry: the antitrust ruling that stripped studios of their theater chains, the attendance collapse from 90 million weekly viewers to under 20 million, and the desperate countermeasures—CinemaScope, Technicolor, 3D, biblical epics—that couldn't stop the bleeding. But running through all of it is Lucille Ball: dismissed as a B-actress by the very studios that were crumbling, who bet everything on the medium Hollywood called an indignity, and ended up buying the lot where they'd told her she'd never be a star.
