Κάστρο Ιωαννίνων: Ένα ταξίδι στο χρόνο και το επιβλητικό Ιτς Καλέ! 🏰✨

In today's video with Theodora, we will take you on a journey through the alleys of the Castle, visit the Fethiye Mosque and the Byzantine Museum, and admire the stunning view from the walls of Its Kale. Discover the rich history, architecture, and traditions that make this place unique. The Castle of Ioannina is the fortified old city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece. The current fortification was largely rebuilt by Ali Pasha in the late Ottoman period, but also incorporates pre-existing Byzantine structures The castle is located in the southeastern corner of the modern city, on the top of a rocky promontory that juts into Lake Pamvotida. The castle is dominated by its two citadels, which had already been created in the late 11th century, as recorded in the Alexiad of Anna Komnenos: the northeastern citadel, now dominated by the Ottoman Aslan Pasha Mosque, and the much larger southeastern citadel, also known as Its Kale. The southeastern citadel, better known by its Ottoman name "Its Kale" (Greek rendering of the Turkish iç Kale meaning "inner fortress"), essentially forms a separate fortress within the old city, covering an area of approximately 30,000 m2. Its foundation is traditionally attributed to the capture of the city by Bohemond in 1082. Under Ali Pasha, Its Kale was rebuilt and became the main residence of the powerful ruler. There he built his palace (sarai), beginning in 1788. The palace is described by European travelers and depicted in a print by G. L. Leach and engraved by H. Adlard, as a large and complex two-story structure with many windows that provided an excellent view of Lake Pamvotida. The palace continued to serve as the administrative center of the city until 1870, when it was demolished, although it had already suffered extensive damage during the siege of 1821–22 by the Sultan's troops that caused the fall of Ali. Excavations have shown that the selamliki was probably located on the north side, with the harem and women's quarters on the south. After the conquest of the city by the Greeks in 1913, the site of the main palace was used for the construction of the city's military hospital, which in turn gave way in 1958 to a new building, designed by V. Charisis, intended to function as a royal pavilion. Since 1995, it has housed the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina. Next to the museum, in the easternmost and highest part of the acropolis, is the Fethiye Mosque with the tomb of Ali Pasha and one of his wives to the northwest, covered by an iron lattice. The mosque occupies the site of the city's Byzantine cathedral and was originally built after the Ottoman conquest in 1430. Rebuilt in a grand style in the 17th century, its current form dates from its reconstruction by Ali Pasha c. 1795. The main surviving part of Ali's palace is the so-called Treasury to the north, a square building of unknown use. A domed space next to it was later converted into the chapel of Agioi Anargyroi. The Treasury was restored in 1989–90 and houses an exhibition on the history and methods of silversmithing in Ioannina and the wider region, for which the area was famous in Ottoman times. Other surviving or excavated structures are the kitchens, dating from the early 19th century, located in the northwestern part of the acropolis, which today serve as a dining room; the gunpowder store to the northeast of the Fethiye mosque, which today serves as an educational space, with a ruined building of unknown purpose between it and the kitchens, as well as the ruined base of another large circular tower of the Byzantine era; a large two-story building northeast of the Treasury, possibly a barracks or an unknown part of the palace, which survives only half of its original length and now serves as a cultural and exhibition space. and a small bath complex to the north 00:00 Intro 00:16 Walking through the narrow streets of the Castle (part 1) 01:00 Visiting il Castello for food 01:28 Walking through the narrow streets of the Castle (part 2) 02:26 Visiting Its Calais 07:26 Farewell Don't forget to like, leave your comments and subscribe to the channel for more travel videos! #excursionalweekends #youtube #subscribe #explore #discovergreece #Ioannina #Ioannina #Giannena #Tzami ___________________________________________________ Equipment I use: 🎥 Drone - DJI Mini 3 Pro: https://bit.ly/3LS4K9B 🎥 Camera - DJI Osmo Pocket 3: https://bit.ly/43oJYoN △ Video shot @ 4K 23.976fps △ Tools I use to help the YouTube Channel: https://bit.ly/45rg5Vw △ Music by Soundstripe #excursionalweekends #youtube #subscribe
