5 dicas após cirurgia de retina
Tips after retinal surgery: how to have a safer and smoother recovery Have you had (or are you going to have) retinal surgery and now your mind is racing? "What if I do something wrong and ruin the result?" This concern is very common: retinal surgery really generates stress, because recovery is usually more demanding than in other procedures, such as cataract surgery. The good news is that, with simple and consistent care, you greatly increase your chances of a good recovery. Below, I have compiled *5 practical post-operative tips for retinal surgery* to help you recover ideally — and the *last two are the most crucial* for success in many cases. 1) Use eye drops correctly (and don't stop on your own) After retinal surgery, the eye drop regimen is usually **more intense and for a longer period**. In general, it starts with several applications a day and gradually reduces. Essential points: *Respect the schedule* (if you are a little late, it's usually not a problem, but don't make it a routine). *Do not apply eye drops on top of each other**: wait about **15 minutes* between applications. *Never stop suddenly* without guidance. Some eye drops (such as corticosteroids) require gradual reduction; stopping midway can severely irritate the eye and hinder recovery. 2) Get proper rest (especially in the first few weeks) Rest after retinal surgery is usually **more demanding**. Avoid sports, physical exertion, and hectic routines. Plan a few days to be quieter: let other people take care of food, cleaning, and chores. In more serious cases, such as *retinal detachment**, we often recommend at least **two very calm weeks**. Physical activity can be avoided for **15 days* — and depending on the case, **more than a month**. Follow exactly what your surgeon recommended for your type of surgery. 3) Attend medical check-ups (they are part of the treatment) Recovery needs to be monitored. During follow-up appointments, the doctor may assess the fundus of the eye, intraocular pressure, and signs of inflammation/complications. Don't miss your appointment. If you need to change the time, let the team know. Many complications are controllable when detected early. 4) Maintain the head position as instructed (crucial tip) For many patients, this is the most important point. In retinal detachment or macular hole surgeries, an internal tamponade (gas or silicone oil) may be placed. To work, it needs to be in contact with the treated area. Therefore, the doctor may instruct you to lie on a specific side or, in the case of a macular hole, to look down as much as possible, especially during the first 3 days, so that the gas presses on the correct area. The "correct" position varies depending on the location of the tear/hole — so follow exactly what was indicated. 5) Improvement may be slow, but it needs to be progressive: has it worsened? Seek urgent care It's normal to recover gradually. The warning sign is when you were stable and **suddenly worsens**: worsening vision, redder, irritated, painful eye, or return of "floaters". In this scenario, schedule an *urgent appointment**. It may just be inflammation, but there is a rare and serious complication called **endophthalmitis* (infection inside the eye), which may require intraocular antibiotics and even further surgery (vitrectomy). Rule of thumb: **it should not worsen**. --- Video Chapters (Timers) 00:00 – Introduction: 5 tips for recovery after retinal surgery 01:01 – Tip 1: Correct use of eye drops post-operatively 01:59 – Tips 2 and 3: Adequate rest and medical check-ups 03:12 – Tip 4: Head position (silicone gas/oil) 05:01 – Tip 5: Progressive improvement and warning signs (when to seek emergency care) --- This video and its comments do not replace a medical consultation and are for educational purposes only.
