In Olivier's Eyes - Marseille: Women in the Northern Districts Season 7 2017-2018 Olivier Delacroix meets with women in the northern districts of Marseille. These are neighborhoods with a notorious reputation: drugs, delinquency, crime... Yet, the people of Marseille are very attached to their city and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. North of the Old Port, high-rise apartment blocks, hastily built in the 1960s primarily to house repatriates from Algeria, occupy a third of the city's surface area and now house 29% of Marseille's population. These are isolated, poorly served areas where unemployment, divorce, and school dropout rates are at record highs. While violence is very real, it's often forgotten that thousands of ordinary families live and work there. Families often supported almost single-handedly by women, whose role is even more crucial here than elsewhere. Divorced, Céline raised her six children alone in the Busserine neighborhood. But when one of them gets caught up in a drug trafficking operation right outside her door, Céline rebels. This courageous mother then fights for three years to pull her eldest son out of the network. Aurélie is a history and geography teacher at a middle school in Busserine. She also works as a youth worker at a community center. The young woman, who initially left Marseille, chose to return to dedicate herself to the young people of the northern districts. Very close to those she supports, she even opens her home to them. Zahra lives in Bassens, a small housing project plagued by drug trafficking for the past 20 years. In this neighborhood where everyone knows everyone else, each person copes with this unique situation. For families who had lived peacefully, everything changed on April 2, 2016, when a settling of scores left three children dead in the neighborhood, including an innocent child killed by a stray bullet. Hamida is a child of the Bricarde housing project. Starting from nothing, and despite the negative image of the neighborhoods that clung to her, this young mother never gave up on her goal: to succeed in the northern districts. A bold, even audacious, gamble that the young woman has just won by opening the first women's fashion boutique in the heart of the neighborhood.
