July 4, 1997 - Trial of the alleged accomplices of the "Monster of Florence" - Full testimony - On the evening Pia Rontini and Claudio Stefanacci lost their lives, Andrea Caini and Tiziana Martelli were returning home to Fiesole after attending a party in honor of Martelli's parents. Around midnight, they had stopped for a drink at a fountain along the dirt road that leads from the Sabbianale provincial road (S.P. 41) to San Martino a Scopeto, a village not far from where the double murders occurred. Suddenly, they saw two cars approaching at high speed and were shocked. The next day, having learned of what had happened in the Vicchio lay-by, they went to the police, but their statements were not recorded. On July 21, 1994, while Pietro Pacciani's trial was underway, Andrea Caini returned to the police station, where he made the following statements: "The two cars, traveling at approximately 60 km/h, demonstrated two things: first, that they couldn't have been residents of those areas, because one car was raising a lot of dust compared to the one following it, and second, that in any case they gave the impression of being together and knowing the road well. The first car had rectangular headlights, it could have been a hatchback, or even a three-box, in any case with a short trunk lid (...) The second car could have been red (...) Both were medium-sized vehicles; the second car struck me because it commented on the scene like this: 'Look at this guy, stuck to the car in front with only his parking lights on!' Both drivers were stocky and not young... They were going in the opposite direction to us; from San Martino a Scopeto toward Dicomano."
