Department of Civil Engineering. In this lesson, we connect statics and calculus by analyzing distributed loads using integration. Up to now, we replaced rectangular, triangular, and trapezoidal loads using simple geometry formulas. But what happens when the load intensity is described by a function such as: w(x)=2+0.5x^2 In that case, geometry is no longer enough. We need calculus. In this video, you’ll learn how to: Derive the differential load element dF = w(x)\,dx Calculate the resultant force using integration Interpret the resultant force as the area under the load curve Compute the first moment of a distributed load Determine the location of the equivalent force using moments Apply the method to a polynomial load function Understand why geometry formulas are special cases of integration We solve a complete example step by step and show how the equivalent force and its location are obtained directly from calculus.
