YAMATAI 邪馬台 - Gaifu 凱風 (PULSE 2025)

"Gaifu" (meaning "Wind of Victory") is a piece composed by Masataka Kobayashi of the professional taiko ensemble Bonten, featuring a duet by Max Ma ‘25 and Dylan Lee ‘25, and a solo by Robert HaoJia Wang ‘25. PULSE 2025 was Yamatai's thirteenth annual Spring concert. Held on April 12, 2025, Yamatai performed for over a thousand audience members at Cornell University's famous Bailey Hall. —— Yamatai is Cornell University’s one and only taiko group. Founded in 2006, Yamatai is energetically developing its individual style as a relatively young taiko team. Our current repertoire consists of pieces written by Bonten (a professional taiko group in Japan), traditional and community taiko pieces, as well as original compositions by Yamatai members and alumni. Through rigorous study and training, Yamatai seeks to explore musical possibilities of taiko drumming in contemporary adaptations while respecting the origins of the traditional art.
