SCENT: Use essential oils, fragrance oils, or blended oils. I prefer fragrance oils because they have the strongest scent throw & their scent lasts a lot longer. NOTE: Not all natural nor synthetic fragrances are created equal, which is why you should only buy from reliable & reputable sources. I recommend using a strong scent as they work better at scenting a room. SOLVENTS A solvent is the base that dilutes fragrance so it can be sprayed. As it evaporates, it disperses scent into the air. Without the solvent, the FO would be sticky, it would land on surfaces as oily spots, it wouldn’t spread in the air, & the scent wouldn’t disperse. The Best Solvent is TSDA SD-40B (denatured by tert-butyl alcohol). Denatured Alcohol is ethanol or ethyl alcohol that has an additive (which is the denaturant) to make it unsuitable for consumption = no beverage taxes = cheaper. SD, SDA, & TSDA - all stand for specifically or specially denatured alcohol. 40-B: is a type of formula created specifically for cosmetics and perfumes. It is ethanol denatured by tert-butyl alcohol (which is the gold standard when it comes to make perfumery). PROOFS: 200-proof ethanol is best, but 99.5% performs identically at a better price point. 90 proof is even cheaper but it's not recommended as this is where problems start to arise. As long as it's SD-40B (ethanol denatured with tert-butyl alcohol) and at least 99.5% proof - you're good! Always use cosmetic or food grade denatured alcohol. Never use a non-ethanol alcohol, especially not methanol. FIXATIVES Fixatives are optional, especially when using perfumers alcohol, but they do improve quality, longevity and stability. They help scent travel further and fill rooms more effectively, they slow down evaporation & make fragrance last 2-3x longer. I recommend dipropylene glycol and benzyl benzoate. RECIPE: 15 milliliters fragrance oil + 10 milliliters perfumer's alcohol. If f adding fixatives, + 1.5 milliliters dipropylene glycol + .5 milliliters benzyl benzoate. Fixatives aren't necessary - but I did get better results. Mix ingredients & allow them to marry (or cure) for 48 hours for best results. PACKAGING I bought the bottles featured in video for this project, and they work fine, but some other bottles that work better (& spray larger quantities of liquid) are fine misters or even regular spray bottles [both linked below].
