Watching Irish Rail trains go by at Kildare 02/03/2026

Kildare is a fascinating station- it has a unique, traditional layout and architecture, but it is also very busy, with frequent trains bustling through to Dublin Heuston and out in the direction of Cork, Tralee, Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Westport and Ballina. The station has what I think is a unique three track layout. There is a platform for trains heading away from Dublin, a fast line for trains heading into Dublin, with the platform for this direction being a loop. Lots of trains run through fast at (I believe) up to 160km/h (100mph). However, on some occasions, the fast line ends up with a freight train parked in it, with fast trains having to slow down and go through the platform. This is what happened when I was there, with GM class 071 loco no83 arriving with a train of logs. I think it was reversing, and there may have been a second 071 involved, but I had to leave before I could find out.
