The Terror is dismantled, but the country sinks into a severe economic crisis, famine, and corruption under the rule of the "Directorate" - a five-man leadership designed to prevent a dictatorship but which turns out to be weak and unsuccessful . Amid this instability, the star of a young and ambitious general from Corsica, Napoleon Bonaparte, begins to rise, who saves the government from rebels and brings brilliant military victories in Italy and Egypt . The episode ends with a desperate France searching for a "strong man" to restore order to the country .
