Air Horns Sound at Haddon Fire Company No. 1, Haddonfield, New Jersey
Haddon Fire Company No. 1 - Haddonfield, New Jersey. I remember hearing these horns when I was a little kid. I was told they have been there since the station was built in the 50s. A firefighter told me that the horns are retired Ship/Train/Fog horns from the 40’s and were made by a company called ‘Clark Cooper’. A warning siren was added in the 1970s to sound before the first blast of the air horns, alerting the surrounding area of the incoming blast of the horns. The warning siren is a separate sound from the air horns, it is a Federal Signal Selectone and it does the “wail”. The air horns have 4, 10 second blasts, with 6 seconds pause. The warning siren is the start of the sequence. The air horns sound for every fire call, but only during the daytime.
