It is the rainy season, with showers coming and going, but lately I’ve come to appreciate this quiet interlude—a peaceful calm before the arrival of full-blown summer. In this video, I start the day with a nostalgic, Showa-style breakfast of siphon-brewed coffee and toast. For lunch, I visit a local "town-style" Chinese restaurant. It is actually a top-notch eatery run by a chef who honed his skills at a renowned authentic Sichuan restaurant in Akasaka, Tokyo. Their signature dish is "Chen Mapo Tofu," named after the chef's mentor. It offers more than just heat; the flavor is rich and deeply savory, making it the perfect match for a bowl of white rice. In the afternoon, I return home to wrap up the midday meal elegantly with dessert and Chinese tea. For my evening drink, I’m preparing two dishes: ・Stir-fried squid and summer vegetables with shiso (Japanese basil) ・Stir-fried nuts with jako (dried baby sardines) These were a huge hit with my husband—a nut lover—and even a squirrel (!?) seemed to think they were delicious!
