Kauniainen (Swedish: Grankulla) is a relatively small city (approx. 9000 inhabitants) completely surrounded by the City of Espoo. Kauniainen was founded by a corporation in 1906, AB Grankulla. It appeared originally as a small private villa community, when a few investors bought a large plot of land and began splitting and selling it for villas, and building infrastructure. The beautiful Villa plots were quite large and built by the best Finnish architects.
