The development of a multimodal transfer center is being pursued at KTX Osong Station, the only junction station in the country. Although it is the central hub of the national railway network's X-axis, the project aims to address the still inconvenient public transportation transfers, parking shortages, and the lack of commercial and cultural facilities; however, the participation of private developers is the key factor. Reporter Jin Hee-jeong reports. [Report] This is the KTX Osong Station Bus Transfer Center, which opened six years ago. While it serves as a connecting transportation network linking downtown Cheongju with Sejong and Daejeon, it is assessed as being insufficient as a regional transportation hub due to the limited number of routes. Parking fees at the station vary widely, and even those available are insufficient. [Osong Station User: "During the day, trains run so infrequently that I have no choice but to transfer, or sometimes I have to take a Mugunghwa train all the way to another station to transfer."] The development of the multimodal transfer center, which had been unable to gain momentum since its opening in 2010, is now set to begin in earnest. The project involves the Korea Rail Network Authority, North Chungcheong Province, Cheongju City, and a private developer jointly leasing and developing a 215,000-square-meter site around Osong Station for 50 years. The key elements are establishing a public transportation transfer system by developing the underground and above-ground areas of the bus transfer center in a multi-dimensional manner, and securing parking space for over 3,500 vehicles. The existing parking lot and underpass space will be filled with commercial, office, and cultural facilities according to the private developer's vision.
