Why is Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider 1961 an American design?

While touring Italy this summer with my son, we decided to take a road trip in a typical Italian classic car around Laco di Como. Driving this 1961 Alfa Romeo was just amazing. The engine of the car is authentic however the gear was changed and made much easier to manoeuvre, also an extra fifth gear was added to the box. The look of the car although classic is almost timeless.
