Mercedes-Benz SLK - How to remove / install the rear bumper | R171

The first step for removing the rear bumper is carried out in the trunk. The trim of the rear center section must be removed here. One screw must be removed on both the left and right sides. Remove the five expansion rivets with an assembly wedge. Remove the eight expansion rivets on the upper edge of the trim with commercially available pliers. Pull out the two rubber end stops for the trunk lid. Open the service flaps on both sides. Pull out the trim from the trunk floor. Switch off the ignition and remove the key. Disconnect the two electrical connectors before taking out the rear center section. These are connected to the switch for the trunk partition and the illumination. Continue behind the service flap. Remove the difficult-to-access bolts and nuts using suitable tools. The position of the nuts is shown here on the other side of the vehicle. Then remove the two bolts. The bumper drops down slightly when the bolts are removed. The last nut is located in the center behind the catch for the trunk lock. If the vehicle has the Parktronic special equipment as shown here: Cut the cable tie on the wiring harness on the right-hand side. Detach the connector. Finally, press the grommet through the hole to the outside. Another six bolts now have to be removed from the outside of the vehicle. Two of the bolts are directly under the bumper. The vehicle lift is then no longer required. The next two bolts are located in the rear section of the fender liner. Remove these bolts on both sides. Detach the bumper with the help of an assistant. Note: On the right-hand side, guide the PTS wiring harness through the hole to the outside. The new bumper is installed in reverse order. After installing the outside parts, check the gap dimension with the trunk closed. Use a gap dimension gauge to measure the dimension 'Trunk lid to bumper'. The specified gap dimension is 5.0 mm with a tolerance of +1.5 and -1.0. In this case, the gap dimension is correct.
