TRUE (I'M JUST CRAZY OVER YOU) George Lewis was born on July 13th 1900 in New Orleans, and he died there on December 31st 1968. Yet it was in Europe especially that he became an idol for numerous clarinet players, professionals and amateurs (like myself) who love playing traditional New Orleans music. These musicians keep the heritage of their "idol" alive by cultivating and developing their clarinet styles, emulating the unique way George Lewis used to play. I am sure that many of George Lewis's followers (as well as jazz musicians who are possibly not so keen on his style) have recorded and distributed his unforgettable and outstanding composition "Burgundy Street Blues" in more versions than the composer might ever have imagined. Brian Carrick, whose CD you have in your hands, is one of those musicians. He has devoted himself to preserving the musical heritage of George Lewis, keeping his style of musicianship alive in countless performances throughout Europe and in New Orleans. The titles on this CD were recorded live with Brian Carrick's Algiers Stompers during the 2004 Bude Jazz Festival. I had the privilege of being a member of the audience at that concert which undoubtedly was one of the festival highlights. Bude Jazz Festival with its friendly atmosphere has become the "Mecca" for lovers of New Orleans Jazz. from all over Europe and beyond, and Brian Carrick has always been part of it. Our common love for the music of George Lewis led to Brian and me becoming friends. Since then I have made a point of attending the Bude Jazz Festival every year. Brian and I have also met at concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany where he and his Algiers Stompers play regularly to large crowds of New Orleans Jazz enthusiasts. It was a great experience and a pleasure for me to be able to organize a series of concerts with my own band, The New Orleans Dream Team, in Germany and the Netherlands with Brian as guest musician. Brian has inspired and encouraged my playing, not only on clarinet but also through his dynamic saxophone style, reminiscent of Emanuel Paul and Capt. John Handy. I was privileged to be asked by Brian to write the notes for this latest CD by the Algiers Stompers, a band brought together because of their love and understanding of the music and musicians of New Orleans. I sincerely hope that listening to this CD will enable you to experience some of the enthusiasm and love of New Orleans Music with which Brian and his Algiers Stompers made the recording!
