Liszt – Sonate, S178 (Howard)

Thank you all so very much for one thousand subscribers! Here is a special video to commemorate this occasion. The first thing any astute listener will notice is that this record was on a period instrument (specifically, an 1860 Steinway). The second thing one might notice could be how accurate this record is to the score, and not a lagging, incoherent thirty-two minute overload of music like many modern records. Where many today naturally incorporate tempo fluctuations, dynamic differences and an unnecessarily slow and indulgent attitude to the section before the fugue, Leslie Howard masterfully conveys the true structure of the work without losing any momentum, and on a superbly beautiful instrument which reacts well to his sensitive tone.
