Glenn Gould documentary "Nice to meet you Glenn!" excerpt: "Where's Born - Where Lies"
Excerpt from the first "fan-made" documentary on Glenn Gould retracing the stages from his childhood to his death. We will start right from the red brick house in The Beaches in Toronto, where Gould was born and raised, up to the age of thirty, and where he breathed music until his childhood. The beautiful and peaceful residential neighborhood was the perfect climate for the young pianist to cultivate his art, but not entirely without difficulties. The school period was the most hostile for the introvert Glenn, who found himself tormented and bullied by his classmates because he was different. Fortunately at home, the loving mother Florence, the patient father Bert and the dog Nicky were waiting for him with open arms every time he returned to tears from lessons. But most of all was the Chickering piano, which was for the prodigious pianist an instrument through which he could make his imagination fly. Taking a time jump, we find ourselves at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, on a cold and rainy day. The few friends gathered to say goodbye to the body of the poet of the piano and some of them remember him, as a friend, as a brother and as a companion in a thousand adventures. Verne Edquist remembers to us that one day, Glenn told him that at 50 he would retire in "great style", almost a premonition. Who would have said that just a short time after his birthday, in a church crowded with people, the world would have said goodbye to one of the greatest artists of all time. He would have liked to be there, just above the others, to see if anyone came to greet him, for the last time, while the air of the Goldbergs hovered in the air of the church. But Glenn never left us, because today, many people remember him with affection and keep his music alive in the heart and the spirit. And he, who was pure at heart, would have liked, in the words of his friend and sound engineer Lorne Tullk, to be remembered as a good person.
