On October 18, 1770, the Treaty of Lochaber drew the first formal colonial boundary line through the southwestern Virginia mountain country. Before that date, the territory that is now Lee County, Scott County, Wise County, and Dickenson County in Virginia was Cherokee country. Specific Scots-Irish and German families were already farming it before Virginia had the legal authority to issue them a land grant for the ground they were standing on. This video covers fifteen surnames that were in that territory before or immediately after the boundary line was drawn. Kilgore, in the Augusta County records before Washington County existed. Nave, German origin, Holston River Valley. Robinette, French Huguenot origin, Wise County and Dickenson County.
