Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (セキロ：シャドウズ ダイ トゥワイス, Sekiro: Shadōzu Dai Towaisu) is an action-adventure video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Activision. It was released on March 22, 2019 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and on October 28, 2020 for Google Stadia. The game is set in a fictional, fantasy version of the Sengoku period in Japan and follows a shinobi known as Wolf, whose main mission is to rescue his lord, the Divine Heir, and protect him, while also seeking to break the cycle of immortality associated with the Dragon's Blood. The gameplay focuses on stealth, exploration, and combat, with a special emphasis on boss battles. Although most of the game takes place in fictional areas, some areas are heavily inspired by real-world buildings and locations in Japan. The game also makes strong references to Buddhist mythology and philosophy. While creating the game, director Hidetaka Miyazaki wanted to create a new intellectual property (IP) that would mark a departure from the Souls series of games, also made by FromSoftware, and sought inspiration from series such as Tenchu.
