The Court emphasized that marriage is a partnership between equals and a husband cannot expect his wife to behave like a domestic worker. It also highlighted that in modern times both partners should share household responsibilities. The case involved a divorce petition filed by a government school teacher who alleged cruelty by his wife. The Court noted that the wife, a lecturer by profession, was financially independent and had not demanded maintenance. The couple, married in 2017, also have a child. This judgment reflects changing social norms, gender equality and the evolving interpretation of cruelty under matrimonial law.
