Having learned how to compare lengths, students discover how to use centimeters, meters, and kilometers to measure precisely based on the size of the object or the distance. I begin by reminding them that before the invention of common units, very different measurements were used, such as the foot, the inch, or the cubit, which made comparisons complicated. To facilitate communication, a common unit was chosen: the meter. I demonstrate what a meter represents through concrete examples: the height of a chair, the height of a four-year-old child, or the length of a long ruler. This helps students understand what "measuring a meter" means in real-life situations. For smaller objects, like a pencil case or a phone, we use centimeters (cm), and for very long distances, like the journey between two cities, we use kilometers (km). Each unit has its specific use, and students learn to choose the correct one for each situation. I also introduce measuring instruments: a ruler for centimeters, a tape measure for meters, and an odometer or GPS for kilometers. Through various examples, students practice identifying the correct unit to use: a bus is measured in meters, a key in centimeters, and the distance between two countries in kilometers. This activity helps them connect units to everyday objects and understand that measurement depends on the size of what is being observed. Finally, I briefly mention other units, such as the millimeter, the decimeter, and the decameter, which the students will encounter later. And this lesson: https://maitrelucas.fr/lecons/unites-... My advice: To help your child become familiar with units of measurement, the most effective approach is to connect them to concrete situations. Opportunities abound in everyday life: measuring the size of a toy, comparing the length of two pencils, or checking the height of a door. By handling a ruler or measuring tape, your child discovers that the numbers on the instrument correspond to a tangible reality, helping them understand units like centimeters and meters. You can also encourage them to estimate before measuring. For example, ask them how many centimeters they think a spoon or a book is, then check together with the ruler. These simple activities develop their observation skills and help them grasp orders of magnitude. During walks or trips, take the opportunity to talk about longer distances. By looking at a sign indicating a town ten kilometers away, you can have them imagine what that represents in relation to the length of a street or a route they know. This connection between concrete objects and numbers helps them better understand what kilometers mean. Learning Objectives – Estimate the orders of magnitude of some lengths. – Verify, using an instrument in simple cases, the orders of magnitude of common units by relating them to familiar objects.
