First performance: Metropolitan Opera, New York, 10 December 1910, with Destinn, Amato and Caruso, conducted by Toscanini. David Belasco, author of the play The Girl of the Golden West on which the opera is based, also wrote the play Madama Butterfly which was the source of Puccini's previous opera. Some of the incidents in La fanciulla del West are apparently based on factual happenings. The heroine's sensational final entrance on horseback does not appear in the play and was suggested by Puccini for increased theatrical impact. Puccini was descended from several generations of composers, back to a previous Giacomo Puccini who was born in 1712. Fanciulla, whilst lacking the fund of memorable melody of Tosca or La Bohéme, is infinitely subtle in its composition and commentators have remarked on its links with the music of Richard Strauss and Debussy.
