Vivarium alum bpb, plundersmith of such conceptual heavy hitters as 'Only Frost Lives Here Now' and 'Rays Turn to Light' has been independently releasing signalwave under the alias test connection ever since their 2022 album 'unlisted'. Their work under this name has been particularly engrossed in the exploration of the microgenre of browser beats, popularized by chrisTTT's Screen Recording project. On their fourth album as test connection, we are treated to a stark divergence from this ethos, in both form and sample utilization. 'great expanse' is a four part work, conjuring meditative drones by extrapolating upon segments pulled from VHS documentaries. The physical signature of tape hiss burns deep into these mysterious soundscapes, patiently spinning an air of subdued disquiet that courses with a haunted analog crackle, before expanding instrumentally in a stunning final piece of elegiac ambient, emerging in its final form as one of their most striking creations as test connection.
