With a unique combination of instruments for this area, this ensemble cherishes airy and filigree playful music, in the true spirit of the French Woodwind school. Virtuosos on their instruments, soloists in orchestras and professors at the Music Academy in Zagreb, formed an ensemble to unite their skills and love of playing together, and to present to the audience this interesting combination of instruments and musical colors. For their first shared CD Ibis, the musicians chose three compositions by three Croatian composers: Ibis by Ivan Božičević, Trio for flute, bassoon and piano by Boris Papandopulo and Magic garden by Zoran Novačić. Representing a symbol of brilliance and splendour, Ibis was in ancient Egypt revered as a holy bird. It was regarded as an embodiment of Thoth, god of wisdom and reason, and thus of truth, knowledge, learning, writing and mathematics. He was as well a symbol of fertility, and it was believed that he was the first bird that Noah released from the Ark. So, this bird seems to have it all. It was this symbolism that inspired the composer Ivan Božičević for the title of his three-part suite composed in 2017. In his own words, the composer, desirous of embracing and expressing all the diversity this mighty bird symbolizes, sought to follow reason through strict minimalist procedures in the development of form, mainly in the piano part, while not giving up the principle of vitality, expressed in free-flowing lines of flute. As the second composition on their CD, trio Jongen decided to present the Trio for flute, bassoon and piano by Boris Papandopulo (1906-1991). This important figure for Croatian music stood out in his works with his curiosity and openness to the new, because of what is not surprising that he uses dodecaphony in this particular work, which belongs to his late opus. However, it is a surprising fact that this composition, written by one of the most important Croatian composers, has never been recorded and almost never performed. Because this CD offers the first ever recording of this composition, its significance for the history of Croatian music in general is not negligible. The third, and at the same time the last composition on the Ibis CD, has a very picturesque name Magic garden. The author of this work is Zoran Novačić, a contemporary Croatian composer and conductor whose opus includes an enviable number of compositions written for wind instruments. The programmatic nature, assumed by the title of the work, is justified by the playful melodic lines of the flute and bassoon that complement each other, as well as the overall dreamy character that creates a pleasing modern musical expression, directly affecting the listeners. The combination of the works that is very thought through, forms a unique and vivid tonal frame that is going to reach every listener, regardless of their individual musical affinities. In fact, everyone will be able to experience, relive and enjoy this music which, in its modern expression, is rich right in its simplicity.
