From the many small mosques to people preparing their carts ready for an evening selling their food around the streets, and locals going about their normal lives, I’m welcomed deep into the villages of Lumajang, Indonesia. One man takes me into his house where tells me of his fishing, and a lady standing on one of the lanes preparing her food, lets me try her homemade satay which is the best I’ve ever had. I stop in a local warung for a coffee where I meet a lady who has been running it for eight years. Many locals in the backstreets of this Javanese town take the time to stop and chat as I wander around. Toward the end of the day the rain starts and as I’m making my way home a man who does islamic charitable work stops to offer me a lift which I accept. He tells me of his work and how he has been helping the people of his community his whole life. I end the day buying some fresh chicken, rice, and vegetables for only three Australian dollars for two meals.
