The world has witnessed two tsunamis in recent years: the 2008 financial crisis and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic crisis of 2020. The first began on the financial side and then hit the productive side of the economy; the second hit the productive sector hard before impacting the financial sector. In both, extraordinary measures were adopted, such as the adoption of unconventional policies by the central bank, all inspired by Keynes: printing money to buy public and private securities, public spending policies to avoid major depressions, among other measures. John Maynard Keynes is a British economist who developed the foundations of macroeconomics and the instruments of economic policy to deal with crises. With a strongly reformist bias, Keynes proposed a new social philosophy to solve "the main problems of the economic society in which we live: [...] its inability to provide full employment and its arbitrary distribution of income." His notions of monetary economics, in which money is not neutral ("money affects the motives and decisions of agents"), of radical uncertainty for which the past is not a guide to the present, and his principle of effective demand – entrepreneurs decide to produce and employ based on their expectations of future sales, with no mechanism guaranteeing full employment in advance – remain relevant and serve as inspiration for building a worldview alternative to liberal ideas.
