Ich fahre den Mercedes-Benz C 111 – der Supersportwagen, den jeder kaufen wollte
Following the Benz Patent-Motorwagen and the Mercedes-Benz 500 K, this installment of "140 Years of Innovation" delves into the future vision of the 1970s: the Mercedes-Benz C 111. Hardly any other experimental vehicle from Mercedes-Benz has generated as much fascination as the C 111. Wedge shape, gullwing doors, pop-up headlights – in 1970, this car didn't just look modern, but like a glimpse into a different automotive era. The C 111-II was presented as the second iteration of the legendary test vehicle. Originally, it was intended for testing the Wankel engine, in this version even featuring a four-rotor design. But the C 111 was far more than a technical experiment: it became a design icon, a dream supercar, and a symbol of just how visionary Mercedes-Benz could be during that time. Despite numerous interested buyers, the C 111 never went into series production. It remained a pure experimental vehicle – and precisely because of this, it became one of the brand's great myths. For my test drive, I had the opportunity to drive a drivable version of the Mercedes-Benz C 111, equipped with a V8 engine: 3,499 cc displacement, 200 hp – yet still retaining that unmistakable C 111 feel with its extreme wedge shape, low entry, gullwing doors, and a presence that still seems futuristic today. It's about the feeling of being in a Mercedes-Benz concept car – and about the question of why this car was never built, yet everyone still knows about it. Enjoy my test drive in the Mercedes-Benz C 111-II – one of the most fascinating experimental vehicles of the 1970s and one of my personal dream cars.
