It was Galungan Day on the 17th of June, and many penjors were put outside of Balinese's houses, and it was truly a beautiful sight! Hari Raya Galungan is one of the most important religious holidays in Bali, celebrated every 210 days on the Pawukon calendar to mark the eternal victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil). During this vibrant festival, Balinese Hindus believe that the spirits of their ancestors and deities descend to earth to visit their former homes. The holiday is a time of immense gratitude, introspection, and spiritual renewal. The island visibly transforms as communities prepare for the festivities, lining the streets with penjor—tall, elegantly curved bamboo poles adorned with fruit, flowers, and coconut leaves to symbolize prosperity and thanksgiving. Families dress in their traditional finest to visit local temples, offering prayers and making elaborate offerings to honor both the gods and visiting ancestors before enjoying communal feasts.
