Southern 5000 and the Summerville “Steam” Special | May 9th, 2026

It’s not everyday that one of TVRM’s diesel locomotives pulls a passenger train to Summerville, but on the Ninth of May, that’s exactly what happened. Because Southern Railway steam locomotive no. 4501 was not yet ready for operation, her distant successor, Southern Railway diesel locomotive no. 5000, a GP38-2 built in 1972 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, was assigned to pull the Summerville Steam Special instead. This video captures both the southbound and northbound legs of the trip, including a photo run-by on the Walker County campus of Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
