Ravel - String Quartet in F major, Movement 2 (Ocarina of Time Soundfont)
A unique tapestry of pizzicato sound immediately renders this scherzo unforgettable to one's ears. Even though pizzicato is extensively used throughout the movement, however, it's far from the only sound that Ravel uses here. In fact, he frequently uses it in combination with non-pizzicato strings. Said combinations are only matched in variety by the material itself. The Trio could hardly be more different (1:54). The prevailing impression it leaves is one of stasis, and its mysterious rhetoric also prefigures the nocturne-like third movement. The return of the Scherzo is far from clear-cut and is actually quite artfully disguised. Halfway through the Trio, the pizzicato strings make a sneaky return, slipping in the Scherzo's opening theme (3:32). The result is that we end up essentially hearing both the Scherzo and the Trio at the same time. Eventually, Ravel does give the Scherzo its proper reprise (4:56), very similar to its original presentation but its details are carefully varied. The ending offers a tiny hint of suspense.
