LITTLE EATON: Erewash Parish #1 of 14

Something different for you today. I have no Wakefield videos ready for the next two Sundays as of yet, so in it’s regular place, here’s some more Derbyshire goodness, and this one and the next one come from the Borough of EREWASH! Myself and the good lady wife were in Derby a couple of weeks ago for an event, and I took full advantage! There are 14 in Erewash, and this first one is situated on the former route of the old A61, which is now the B6179, just north of the Derby section of the A38. There’s a lot to talk about in this one, and I was helped in no small part by an amazing information board on the corner of The Town, right in the centre of the village Many of the village's historic buildings are built of stone which came from local quarries in the 1800s. In late June/early July like many villages in Derbyshire, there’s a village carnival here which follows a week of events leading up to it. The carnival always concludes with a fancy dress parade from the top of the village at through the village and a small fair sets up, along with stalls, refreshments and a barbecue serving meat from the local butchers. A well known and popular character from here is known as “Alice in the Bacon Box”, and there are two forms of railway history. It was served by a railway station on the Midland Railway Ripley Branch, and it had something called a Gangway, also known as the Derby Canal Railway – which was a horse drawn single track railway connected to the terminus of the Derby Canal.
